Andy Shiach passed away recently, and for all of us at Earproof that is a moment to pause.

Andy damaged his own hearing in the seventies, in a studio, and it brought his music career to an abrupt end. Rather than accept that, he retrained as an audiologist and founded Advanced Communication Solutions (ACS) in England, with one goal: to spare other musicians what had happened to him. He was one of the first audiologists in the world to focus specifically on in-ear monitoring for musicians, and his work in development and awareness helped lay the foundation for how musicians perform on stage today.

At Earproof we have had the privilege of learning from Andy. His mission was never to build a big company, but to make sure musicians keep their hearing, and that is exactly what we stand for.

If you would like to know more about Andy’s role, and that of other pioneers in the history of hearing protection for musicians, have a look at the first part of our blog series on the subject.
